Barbara Cook, oboe

Picture
Originally trained as a violinist, Barbara Goorevitch Cook began playing oboe at the age of 12. She graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. in Music Performance from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), having won prizes in the Atwater Kent and Frank Sinatra Musical Performance Awards solo competitions.  She then continued her oboe studies with Laila Storch of Seattle's Soni Ventorum Quintet and Louis Rosenblatt of the Philadelphia Orchestra.  Now a busy free-lance oboist based in the Atlanta area, Ms. Cook has performed with orchestras throughout California, Oregon, Colorado, the Southeast and across the pond, including the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Symphony Orchestra, and the International Chamber Ensemble of Rome, Italy.  Arguably one of the premier oboe instructors in the state, Ms. Cook’s private students have matriculated to the Curtis Institute and Cleveland Institute of Music, the Eastman School of Music, Northwestern, Indiana, Harvard, Georgetown, Boston and Emory Universities, Florida State University and the University of Georgia, and have performed at the Brevard, Eastern, Aspen and Interlochen Music Festivals, and the celebrated Boston University Tanglewood Institute.  For many years Ms. Cook served as oboe instructor for the Atlanta Symphony’s Talent Development Program.  Following a rewarding twenty-five year career as a Senior Learning Designer for Delta Air Lines, Inc., Ms. Cook spends her free time making reeds and traveling.
